backup

An IT term referring to the copy of computer files and software made to avoid loss of data and facilitate recovery in the event of a system crash. A backup may be saved in several different ways:

  • USB sticks/ CDs (limited space)
  • external drive (adequate capacity but cumbersome)
  • online backup (cost and security issues)

The value of data is not easy to estimate but its loss - be it through spilled tea or computer damage - is always a nuisance and sometimes disastrous. Regular backup is uncomplicated but invaluable.
