business card

The business card of today has many predecessors. Visiting cards were used in China in the 15th century but it wasn't until the 17th century that they became commonplace in Europe. Trade cards were distributed by merchants as a means of advertising but also as maps for customers as street numbering was not usual. Visiting or calling cards, first introduced in France by the court of Louis XIV, played an important role in European high society. There were many rules and traditions which applied to the ownership and exchange of cards. Even today, business cards are associated with etiquette and status in many cultures.

Business card format is not standardized but the most common dimensions are 85,60 × 53,98 mm.
