cloakroom
The term refers to a room or space used to hang outer garments and persists from the time when cloaks were more common than coats. Public cloakrooms (e.g. in theaters, museums) where jackets, coats, umbrellas and bags are left can involve complex processes which are often outsourced to external service providers. The opportunity to leave these articles at the entrance is a courtesy shown to guests but sometimes obligatory for reasons of cleanliness and more often, for reasons of security.
