A cross between emotion and icon. It refers to punctuation marks which are combined to express emotions or facial expressions in the context of email texts. The most common are :-) and :-( which represent a happy and unhappy face respectively. There are very many emoticons and new ones are continually being added. However, their use is limited to informal correspondence.
